Gears and Ears
Journal of The Rotary Club of Lake Buena Vista
August 2018
From Club President Greg Gorski
Landon, my 15 month old grandson, just took his first steps this past
month. He has since progressed from furniture walking to walking parent to parent
to now walking on his own with the proudest smile that’s tough to put into words.
Like Landon, I too am taking my first steps, as I ease into the Club President role.
Fortunately, with the support of my “Rotary” family, each passing week the steps
get a little easier and I walk with a little more confidence with my new name
badge.
I do have great confidence that this year’s 2018-19 Goals will be achieved
by this Club. We have committed to lofty goals that include more service hours
in the greater Orlando community, 5 new members added to our membership
who are committed to service and fellowship, and reviving our Club finances in
the wake of our successful launch of our 501c3 Foundation. These goals support
the message delivered by District Governor Ron Janssen last month which is to “Be the Inspiration” in our
community. Ron’s other message was “if you aren’t having fun, you are not doing it right”. I certainly have seen
this Club have a lot of fun at everything it does, so I am certain we are doing it (W)right.
Speaking of doing it right, that describes our Rotary Youth Exchange program. This month, with the
direction of Jeff Smith and David Brinckerhoff, on August 2nd we will be welcoming to our Club our incoming
male student, Michele (Michi) from Italy. Then, on August 9th, we will celebrate the experiences of our student
returning from Poland, Gina Perez. The courage, confidence and maturity of these students is inspiring!
Speaking of students (see the tie in themes here? you can thank my 4th grade teacher and first childhood
crush, Mrs. Buxton) Mona Moorjani, a lifetime teacher of students, officially joined our Club in July. Welcome
to the family Mona! On a sadder note, three Rotarians had to leave the Club in July. We thank Debra,
Lisamarie, and Andreia for their service and friendship and hope to see them back in the Club again soon. They
will always be welcome!
Finally, I want to welcome you to volunteer at the WOW backpack event on Saturday morning at the
Orlando Science Center. Details will be at the meeting. Can you believe it’s back to school time again? Where
did the summer go? When I was up North back to school meant cooler temps, I have not found that to be true
in Florida. I hope all the parents and grandparents enjoyed summer time with their families. I also ask that you
keep Garth in your prayers for a speedy and healthy recovery from his broken arm. Thinking of you every day
friend!
Inspire Someone Today,
Greg
