Gears and Ears

Journal of The Rotary Club of Lake Buena Vista
                                                     September 2018

                                   From Club President Greg Gorski

Landon turned 16 months old on August 25th, yes we count by months at this age,
and he is picking up speed on those two little chubby stumps we call legs. He is also quite
opinionated now and will shout with conviction at me “Da ya ya ya” or “Aya aya aya”
!!!! Not entirely sure what he means but he sure declares it with passion and intent as he
waddles by me with his arms in the air at break neck speed through the kitchen.
This is the kind of excitement I saw at the WOW Legacy backpack scavenger
hunt event at the Orlando Science Center in August. Nearly 50 students received
backpacks, school supplies and food handed out by numerous volunteers including 10 Rotarians from our Club
and our good friend Dawn Hatch. It was truly inspiring to see the community, parents, students and Rotarians
come together at the Orlando Science Center. All there supporting the great work of Secily’s Wow Legacy
        Foundation.
Our Club is also a Foundation, 501c3 to be exact, but it is built on a solid foundation of caring people.
This past month many members or family of members had to face difficult news regarding health. It seemed
each passing week was met with another life challenge. It was in these moments I realized the importance and
heart felt affection of our Rotary family. Member after member reaching out to ask how they can help or is there
anything they can do? New members, life long members, it didn’t matter. Each one genuinely caring about
another. This is our secret sauce folks. Being there and available when a friend needs a laugh, a hand held, a
hug, or a sympathetic ear. To repeat one of our members: “God doesn’t give us more than we can handle.” In
this Club, you don’t have to handle it alone either.
I would now like to capture some of the Club activity in August. We had 5 meetings and a well attended
First Tuesday at Urbain 40 with fellowship, laughs and our District Governor Ron attending. The Club had 5
attendees at RLI (Patti, Mona, Karuna, Anthony and Jean) and Augustine as a discussion leader. In addition, we
supported district events with Jean attending a tea party for RYE students and many members volunteered at the
        Wheelchair Games hosted in Orlando.
Lastly a shout out to Jean for covering my vacation week in New Hampshire. Thank you Anthony for
hosting an off site Rotary Service Project Meeting at your house. I look forward to your classification talk and
Service Project Criteria presentations in September. Thank you Patti for stepping up and taking on some of
Cornelia’s responsibilities in her absence. Thank you Karuna for working so hard on revitalizing the Rotaract
Club at Rosen College. Welcome back Mel. Great to see you and hear your jokes. Welcome back Harry from
sunny and cool Canada. Did you bring any of that weather back with you?

I wish everyone a safe and happy Labor Day weekend with your family and friends!

                                     Inspire Someone Today,

                                     Greg
