Breast Cancer Awareness Month
October is designated as “Breast Cancer Awareness” month: an international health
campaign to focus early detection and, if needed, treatment. For nearly four decades, there
has been a campaign to educate the public about breast cancer. This year’s theme is Thrive
365! As a breast cancer survivor and carrier of the breast cancer gene, it has always been my
mission raise awareness about the disease, educate women and men about the importance
of getting regular check-ups, breast self-exam and supporting men and women who are under
treatment. We all know someone touched by cancer.
What are the facts?
• Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed among women in the United
States. It is the 2nd leading cause of death from cancer among women. Only lung cancer
kills more women each year.
• In 2022, it is estimated that nearly 44,000 people in the U.S. will die from breast cancer.
• 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. That’s one person every
2 minutes in the U.S.
• The two most common risk factors of breast cancer are being born
female and getting older.
• The 5-year relative survival rate for women in the United States with non-metastatic
invasive breast cancer is 91%. The 10-year relative survival rate for women with non-
metastatic invasive breast cancer is 85%.

We are all different and, as a result, may have different symptoms of breast cancer. Some people
have no signs or symptoms at all. It is important for you to know the symptoms of breast cancer.
