Some warning signs of breast cancer are:
• New lump in the breast or underarm (armpit).
• Thickening or swelling of a part of the breast.
• Irritation or dimpling of breast skin.
• Redness or flaky skin in the nipple area or the breast.
• Pulling in of the nipple or pain in the nipple area.
• Nipple discharge other than breast milk, including blood.
• Any change in the size or the shape of the breast.
• Pain in any area of the breast.
• A breast is red and feels warm.
Be Proactive:
• Know your risk of developing breast cancer including your family history.
• Know “your normal”. Any changes in your health should be followed up with your primary
care physician. Breast self - exam should be done monthly to understand your normal. It
does not replace getting a mammogram.
• For those with an average risk of developing breast cancer, a mammogram should be
done beginning at age 40.
• Make healthy lifestyle choices including maintaining a healthy weight, getting regular
exercise, and limiting alcohol intake.
• Provide support for those that are under treatment when possible.
As Rotarians we have a chance to change the world. Let’s focus this month on ensuring our
loved ones including family and friends focus on their health. Your engagement could save
someone’s life!
